Dental Clinic SEO Case Study: From Being Seen to Being Chosen

An established clinic, a competitive metro, and a website stuck on page two while patients booked elsewhere.

Dentistry carries a double trust bar: it is YMYL healthcare, where Google applies its strictest quality standards, and it is local, where every practice in the metro competes for the same patients. This case study shows what happened when an Australian dental clinic cleared both bars. Organic clicks grew 343% in six months, from 996 to 4,410, while CTR doubled and average position climbed 11 places. Every number below comes from Google Search Console.

The proof

The Graph Google Recorded

The screenshot below is the unedited Google Search Console performance report for this campaign, comparing six months against the previous six in the daily view. The previous period hovers in single-digit daily clicks. The current period runs at 20 to 45 clicks per day, week after week, with no single lucky spike doing the work. That daily consistency is the signature of rankings that actually moved, not a viral fluke.

The starting problem

A Good Clinic Losing Patients It Never Met

The clinic came to us established, respected, and busy enough to survive, in one of Australia's competitive metro markets where dozens of practices fight for the same postcode's patients. Its website told a different story: 996 organic clicks in six months, an average of a handful of visits from Google per day, at a 0.4% click-through rate.

The painful part is what those numbers imply about the patients the clinic never saw. Someone with a cracked tooth does not scroll to page two. A parent looking for a family dentist picks from the first results they trust, rings one, and books. At an average position of 24.3, this clinic was not in that conversation. It existed in Google's index, technically, the way a shop down an unlit alley technically exists on the high street.

And dentistry gives a struggling site no easy way up. Google treats dental content as YMYL healthcare, so thin pages and vague expertise get filtered hard, while local competition means every position is contested by practices investing in their own visibility. Waiting it out was not going to work. The market does not hand back positions it has already taken.

What we found

The Diagnostic: Four Focus Areas

Our audit surfaced the pattern we see on most underperforming dental websites. None of these findings is unusual on its own; together they explain a 0.4% CTR and a page-two average precisely. These four became the campaign's focus areas.

Treatment searches the site never entered

Patients searched for specific treatments, symptoms, and 'near me' style queries. The site was structured around the clinic's own menu of services in its own language, so Google could not confidently match its pages to the searches patients were actually typing.

Local intent going to competitors

In a metro with dozens of practices competing for the same patients, the clinics that had invested in local relevance owned the visible results. This clinic's local signals were thin and inconsistent, so proximity alone was not enough to surface it.

A page-two average position

An average position of 24.3 put the clinic's typical result deep into page two. Patients pick from the first results they trust, and page two is where phone calls go to die. Visibility that far down produced a 0.4% CTR and single-digit daily clicks.

Content below the healthcare trust bar

Dentistry is YMYL healthcare in Google's eyes. Service pages that were thin, generic, or unclear about the expertise behind them could not satisfy the quality standards Google applies to health topics, so even relevant pages struggled to climb.

A dental clinic does not win by being seen once. It wins when it appears where patients look first and reads like the practice they can trust, because patients pick from the first results they trust and page two is where phone calls go to die.

What we did

The Campaign, Phase by Phase

We ran this campaign in the order a local healthcare site demands: relevance before reach, trust before scale. Each phase fed the next, and all of it was measured against what Google Search Console actually recorded for the clinic's own market.

1

Local SEO alignment

We rebuilt the clinic's local relevance first: mapping service pages to the treatment and 'near me' searches patients in its metro actually use, tightening the signals that connect the website to the physical clinic, and closing the consistency gaps that let competitors own the local results. Our local SEO service exists for exactly this situation, a business whose patients walk through a door.

2

Pages restructured around patient intent

We reworked the site's on-page structure so every important treatment had a clear, focused page speaking the patient's language instead of the clinic's. Titles, headings, and internal links were aligned to real queries, which is what let Google start matching the site to searches it had never appeared for before.

3

Content that clears the YMYL bar

We expanded and rewrote treatment content to answer real patient questions in plain language, with the expertise and accountability signals Google demands from health topics. This is the discipline behind our content writing service: people-first pages that reassure a nervous patient and satisfy a Google quality rater at the same time.

Monthly measurement and iteration

Every month we read what Google Search Console recorded, prioritized the next highest-impact improvement, and shipped it. Six months of that cycle is what turned single-digit daily clicks into 20 to 45 per day. The campaign ran under our Complete Monthly SEO service, the same program behind most graphs on this site.

The results

Reading the Numbers Honestly

Organic clicks grew 343% in six months, from 996 to 4,410. Impressions grew 139%, from 243K to 582K. Notice the gap between those two growth rates, because it is the most important thing in this graph: clicks grew far faster than impressions. The clinic did not merely show up more often. A larger share of the people who saw it chose it.

The CTR line makes that explicit. Average CTR doubled from 0.4% to 0.8% while impressions more than doubled. That combination is rare. When a site starts appearing for thousands of new queries, the new visibility usually lands at low positions where almost nobody clicks, and average CTR falls. Doubling CTR across a footprint 2.4 times larger means the new impressions arrived at positions worth clicking and the snippets earned the click when they got there. Seen, then chosen.

Average position explains why. It improved from 24.3 to 13.2, a gain of 11 places that moves the clinic's typical result from the depths of page two to the border of page one, with many core queries landing above it. For local healthcare searches, where patients rarely look past the first screen of results they trust, those 11 positions are the entire difference between decoration and demand.

The daily view confirms the result held. Where the previous period shows single-digit clicks per day, the current period runs at 20 to 45 every day, sustained across the full six months. That is not a campaign that spiked; it is a clinic whose new positions became its new baseline. Healthcare and local campaigns tend to need exactly this kind of runway, because the trust and proximity signals Google weighs for a dental site compound gradually rather than spiking overnight.

What this means for you

The Double Trust Bar Is Beatable

Dentistry combines the two hardest tests in search: Google's YMYL healthcare scrutiny and metro-level local competition. If an established clinic can quadruple its organic clicks under both at once, the same process has room to work for any business whose customers choose from the first trustworthy results they see: medical and allied health practices, legal services, home services, and local businesses of every kind.

The transferable lesson is that visibility and preference are different problems. Plenty of campaigns can inflate impressions. This one grew clicks 343% on 139% more impressions because the work targeted both halves: local and on-page alignment put the clinic where patients look, and healthcare-grade content made it the result they picked. If your own graph shows impressions without clicks, that second half is what is missing.

Geography, for the record, is not a barrier. We are an Austin, TX agency, and this clinic competes in an Australian metro. We optimize for your patients' search market, wherever it is, and the free audit below is how we start mapping yours.
