Medical Hospital SEO Case Study: 422% More Clicks in a YMYL Niche
Patients were searching for care and finding a directory site instead of the hospital.
Healthcare is the hardest trust bar in Google. Medical queries fall under YMYL, Your Money or Your Life, the category where Google applies its strictest quality standards. This case study shows what happened when we brought real expertise and trust signals to a medical hospital website: clicks grew from 64 to 334 in three months, impressions grew 427%, and CTR held steady. Every number below comes from Google Search Console.

The proof
The Graph Google Recorded
The screenshot below is the unedited Google Search Console performance report for this campaign, comparing three months against the previous three. The previous-period lines sit near zero. The current-period lines climb steadily: no single lucky spike, just week after week of new queries turning into impressions and impressions turning into clicks.

The starting problem
A Hospital That Google Would Not Trust
The hospital came to us with a problem that is painfully common in healthcare. It had real doctors, real departments, and real patients walking through its doors every day, yet its website earned 64 organic clicks in three months. That is barely five visits from Google per week for an entire medical institution.
Worse, the visibility that did exist was going to the wrong places. When people in the area searched for the kind of care this hospital provides, they landed on healthcare directories, aggregator listings, and generic health portals. A patient trying to find a specialist scrolled past pages of middlemen before ever seeing the institution that could actually treat them.
And this is the niche where Google is least forgiving. Medical queries are YMYL, so Google's systems demand demonstrated experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust before they will surface a page. A hospital website with thin content, unclear authorship, and technical problems does not get the benefit of the doubt. It gets buried, and the directories with stronger sites take its place.
What we found
The Diagnostic: Four Focus Areas
Our audit surfaced the pattern we see on most underperforming healthcare websites. None of these findings is exotic; the difference is that on a YMYL site each one carries double weight, because it undermines both rankings and trust. These became the campaign's focus areas.
Service lines invisible to search
Key departments and treatment pages were not structured around how patients actually search. People looked for symptoms, treatments, and specialists; the site spoke in internal department language Google could not match to those queries.
Directories outranking the hospital
For care-related searches in its own area, third-party directories and aggregator listings appeared above the hospital itself. Patients found a middleman first, and the hospital depended on those platforms for its own visibility.
Technical trust gaps
Crawl and indexation issues kept important pages out of Google's index entirely, and thin, near-duplicate templates diluted the pages that were indexed. For a YMYL site, technical sloppiness reads as a trust problem, not just a crawl problem.
Weak E-E-A-T signals
Content lacked clear medical authorship, credentials, and review signals. In a niche where Google explicitly demands demonstrated expertise, pages that could not show who stood behind them had little chance of ranking.
In healthcare SEO there are no shortcuts past trust. Growth only happens when the expertise signals are real, because Google's YMYL bar is designed to filter out everyone who fakes them.
What we did
The Campaign, Phase by Phase
We ran this campaign in the order that YMYL sites demand: foundation before visibility, trust before scale. Each phase fed the next.
Technical foundation first
We started with a full crawl and indexation cleanup so Google could reliably reach, render, and index every important service page. Duplicate templates were consolidated, internal linking was rebuilt around service lines, and structured data was added so Google could understand the organization. On a YMYL site this groundwork is non-negotiable.
Explore Technical SEOLocal visibility for patients nearby
A hospital serves the people who can physically reach it, so we aligned the site with local search: service pages mapped to how patients in the area actually search for care, consistent organization details, and signals connecting the website to the physical institution. Our local SEO service exists precisely for businesses whose customers walk through a door.
Explore Local SEOContent that earns YMYL trust
We reworked and expanded service-line content to answer real patient questions in plain language, with clear expertise and accountability signals behind every page. No content farm output, no AI slop, no medical claims without backing. This is the discipline our content writing service applies: people-first pages that satisfy both a worried patient and a Google quality rater.

The results
Reading the Numbers Honestly
Organic clicks grew 422% in three months, from 64 to 334. Impressions grew 427%, from 2.26K to 11.9K. Those two numbers moving in lockstep is the first thing worth noticing: the site did not just appear more often, it converted that new visibility into visits at the same rate as before.
That is what the CTR line proves. Average CTR held at 2.8% while impressions more than quintupled. Normally, when a site suddenly appears for thousands of new queries, average CTR falls, because the new impressions arrive at low positions where almost nobody clicks. Holding 2.8% across a footprint five times larger means the new queries were genuinely relevant and the pages earned their clicks.
Average position tells the same honest story from the other side. It improved from 28.5 to 25.7, which looks modest until you remember what an average hides. Every one of those thousands of new queries entered the data at a low starting position, diluting the blended number even as established pages climbed. When a site grows clicks 422% while its average position still improves, the pages doing the ranking moved a lot further than 2.8 spots.
The shape of the graph matters as much as the totals. The previous-period lines sit near zero. The current lines rise steadily across the whole window, which is what compounding trust looks like in a YMYL niche: Google extends visibility gradually as the signals prove out, and each week's gains hold instead of spiking and collapsing. Healthcare campaigns often take longer than three months to move for exactly that reason, so we treat this timeline as a strong outcome, not a guaranteed one.
What this means for you
If SEO Works Here, It Works in Your Niche
Healthcare is the strictest test Google runs. If a medical hospital website can more than quintuple its organic clicks under YMYL scrutiny, the same process has room to work in markets where the trust bar is lower: legal, finance-adjacent services, home services, ecommerce, SaaS, local businesses of every kind.
The transferable lesson is the order of operations. This result did not come from chasing keywords first. It came from fixing the technical foundation, aligning the site with how real people search locally, and building content that proves expertise, then letting Google's systems verify those signals over time. Directories were outranking the hospital because the directories had done that work and the hospital had not. Three months later, patients searching for care found the institution itself.
If your customers are currently finding aggregators, marketplaces, or competitors before they find you, that is not a permanent condition. It is a diagnosable, fixable gap, and the free audit below is how we start diagnosing it.
